    Introduction: This package provides Wisconsin Nursing Home Administrators (NHAs) with 24 hours of NAB approved web-based continuing education that can be applied toward the yearly NHA administrator license renewal.
     
    The package consists of the following courses:

    • EP1 Basics, Hazards, and Teamwork - Emergency Planning Module 1 (2.5 hours)
    • EP2 Sheltering, Evacuating, Communicating - Emergency Planning Module 2 (2.5 hours)
    • EP3 Hazard Specific Guides - Emergency Planning Module 3 (2.5 hours)
    • EP4 Recovering from an Emergency - Emergency Planning Module 4 (2 hours)
    • EP5 Writing, Training, and Practicing - Emergency Planning Module 5 (1.75 hours)
    • Fire Safety Devices (2 hours)
    • Malnutrition (1 hour)
    • Promoting Social Interaction (1.25 hours)
    • QA/QI Part 1: Foundation for Success (1.5 hours)
    • QA/QI Part 2: Successful Action Plans (1.5 hours)
    • Suicide and Depression (1 hour)

    Course Authors: The course Promoting Social Interaction was written by Dr. Bonnie L. Walker and Claire S. Cole, RN, C. The curriculum was reviewed by an interdisciplinary team of experts including: Barbara Resnick, PhD and Ellen Wruble, PhD. The program was developed by Harrington Software Associates, Inc, funded by a grant from NIA R44AG028194, Restorative Care Training for Staff in Long-Term Care Facilities.

    The courses Choking and Aspiration, Malnutrition, and Suicide were adapted from Injury Prevention for the Elderly, a video/print training program consisting of ten modules written by Bonnie L. Walker, PhD. The curriculum was developed by an interdisciplinary team of experts including: Edward F. Ansello, PhD; Kenneth H. Beck, PhD; Norman K. Bohrer, MD; Claire S. Cole, MA, RN; Peter P. Lamy, ScD, PhD; Ruth K. Miller, MS; Nancy J. Osgood, PhD; James P. Richardson, MD, MPH; Margaret V. Rowe, RPH, PharmD; April L. Walker, BS; Jean F. Wyman, RN, PhD; and Ilene H. Zuckerman, PharmD. The CBT and Web versions of this program were developed by Harrington Software Associates, Inc, funded by a grant from NIA 2R44 AG18678, Using CBT and the Web to Train Board and Care Staff.

    The Emergency Preparedness Courses were written by Susan S. Harrington, MS, PE as part of a research grant funded by the National Institute on Aging. The curriculum was developed by an interdisciplinary team of experts including: Joseph Barbera, M.D., Co-Director of the George Washington University Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management; Bruce Binder, MPH, CEM, CBCP, Emergency management/Disaster planning consultant; Claire Cole, MA, Nurse educator; Nick Mason, MS, Licensed LTC Administrator, and Ann Meador, MA, Co-chair of the Southeast Texas Hurricane Task Force. The CBT program was developed by Harrington Software Associates, Inc, and funded by grant NIA 2R44AG029692, Preparing Long-Term Care Facilities for Natural and Man-Made Disasters.

    The Fire Safety Devices course was adapted from Fire Safety for the Eldery, a video/print training program consisting of eight modules written by Bonnie L. Walker, PhD. The curriculum was developed by an interdisciplinary team of experts including: John L. Bryan, Ed D, Chairperson of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland; Harry Bradley, BS, PE, Maryland State Fire Marshal; Harold D. Hicks, BS, PE, Atlantic Code Consultants; Susan Shemanski Harrington, MS, PE, Fire Protection Engineer; Terezie Bohrer, RN, MSW, Director of Disability Support Services, Prince George’s County Health Department; Marjorie Owens, MSW, Housing Coordinator for Project Home, Maryland Department of Human Resources; Darolyn Thomas, BS, Melwood Vocational Training; Edward Ansello, PhD, Director of the Virginia Center on Aging; Sandra Fitzler, Hillhaven Corporation; J. Michael Thompson, BS, PE, Gage-Babcock Associates; Jean Zink, BS, Center on Aging, University of Maryland; Mayer Zimmerman, MS, Health Care Financing Administration; Terry G. Summons, MS, Bowie Department of Human Services; and Kenneth Beck, PhD, Director of Research at the Safety Education Center, University of Maryland.     The Culture Change Course was written by Bettie J. Farrar, MS and Susan S. Harrington, MS with contributions from Claire C. Cole, MA.

    The Dementia and Mental Illness Course was written by Susan S. Harrington, MS, PE and Claire C. Cole, RN, C. The curriculum was reviewed by Dr. James P. Richardson, Chief of Geriatric Medicine, St.Agnes Hospital.

    The QA/QI courses were written by Susan S. Harrington, MS, with contributions from Claire C. Cole, MA, and Mary Chiles, Chiles Healthcare Consulting. The curriculum was reviewed by Margaret Rowe, PharmD and Bettie Farrar.

    NAB Approval Information: The Long-Term Care Learning Center is a Certified Sponsor of professional continuing education with the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) and has approved this program for the number of clock hours listed under their sponsor agreement with NAB/NCERS. State licensure boards, however, have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses.
