Introduction: A fire hazard is something that can start a fire, make a fire worse, or reduce a person’s ability to escape. The purpose of this program is to help you prevent fire-related deaths and injuries at your facility by identifying and eliminating fire hazards.
 
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Describe how fires start, grow, and spread;
  • Describe the dangers of smoke;
  • List the primary causes of fires and fire deaths in long-term care;
  • Describe how the characteristics of residents impact fire hazards and prevention;
  • Identify fire hazards in long-term care, and;
  • Describe how to eliminate fire hazards.

Course Authors: This course was adapted from Fire Safety for the Eldery, a video/print training program consisting of eight modules written by Bonnie L. Walker, PhD. NAB Approval Information: This educational offering has been reviewed by the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS) of the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) and approved for 2 clock hours.
