Introduction: Restorative care is a philosophy. People who support this philosophy believe that the residents should be encouraged and helped to engage in functional and physical activities that match their capabilities during all activities of daily living. The focus of care is not just on getting the residents dressed and undressed, but on having the residents do as much of the required tasks as their abilities allow.

The purpose of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to promote independent dressing for the residents at your facility.
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define restorative care as it applies to dressing;
  • Identify benefits of independent dressing for residents;
  • Understand the residents' physical, sensory, and cognitive skills as related to independent dressing;
  • Acquire skills and information related to evaluating the residents' physical, sensory, and cognitive functional levels;
  • Learn ways to promote independent resident dressing;
  • Identify appropriate adaptive equipment that can increase a resident’s ability to dress independently;
  • Understand the importance of exercise and the characteristics of an appropriate exercise program; and
  • Implement motivational techniques to encourage independent resident dressing.
