Introduction: Restorative care is a philosophy. People who support this philosophy believe that the residents should be encouraged and helped to engage in functional and physical activities that match their capabilities during all activities of daily living. The focus of care is not just on getting the tasks done, but on having the residents do as much of their personal care as their abilities allow.

The purpose of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to promote independent personal care for the residents at your facility.

Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define restorative care as it applies to all aspects of personal care;
  • Identify benefits for residents of performing personal care independently;
  • Understand the resident’s physical, sensory, and cognitive skills as related to various types of personal care;
  • Acquire skills and information related to evaluating the resident’s physical, sensory, and cognitive functional levels;
  • Learn ways to promote independent bathing and grooming;
  • Identify appropriate adaptive equipment that can increase a resident’s ability to bath and groom themselves more independently;
