Audience: Staff of Maryland Assisted Living Facilities Approvals/Accreditation: - Maryland– The Long-Term Care Learning Center is an OHCQ approved vendor for Cognitive Impairment and Mental Illness training. This course is designed to meet the COMAR requirement for cognitive impairment, mental illness, and behavioral health training for new staff. This training is Not part of 20 hour or 80 hour manager course.
Introduction: People of all ages experience adverse life events, changes, and losses. In each situation, they respond in ways unique to their own personalities and coping styles. Among older adults, there is an increased risk of developing depression. When people become depressed, their risk of suicide increases. This program will help you recognize depression and prevent suicide in older people. It also discusses hopelessness, self-harming behaviors, grief, and alcohol/substance abuse.
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to: - Recognize warning signs of suicide and depression;
- Remove suicide hazards from the environment;
- Prevent suicide by increasing the level of supervision when needed; and
- Teach caregivers how to recognize depression and prevent suicide in older people.
