Introduction:
The purpose of this training is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to recognize, understand, and respond effectively to dementia-related behaviors. Your understanding and response to these behaviors can significantly improve the quality of life for your residents.
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to: - Describe how dementia affects the brain, behavior, and communication in older adults;
- Identify common triggers and unmet needs that may lead to dementia-related behaviors;
- Apply proactive strategies to reduce the likelihood of behavioral incidents;
- Demonstrate appropriate, person-centered responses to specific behaviors including: aggression/anger; anxiety/agitation; hallucinations/delusions; sundowning/sleep issues; wandering/exit-seeking; resistance to care; repetitive questioning; and inappropriate sexual behavior; and
- Collaborate effectively with the care team to share observations, document incidents, and develop consistent intervention approaches.

Course Author: Susan Shemanski Harrington, MS, PE is co-founder and President of Harrington Software Associates, Inc./ Long-Term Care Learning Center a company specializing in developing innovative training solutions for long-term care staff. Harrington has over 25 years experience conducting research and developing training for the long-term care industry. Her experience includes serving as the principal investigator for research grants funded by the National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Nursing Research, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. In each project, she developed and evaluated innovative training programs. Her research articles have appeared in Fire Technology, Journal for Nurses in Staff Development, Nurse Education Today, Educational Gerontology, Journal of Safety Research, and Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing. Since 2007, Harrington has provided training to thousands of long-term care administrators and staff in 20 states throughout the country. Course Reviewers: Ruthie Fishman, CDP/CADDCT, has over 20 years of experience in the field of long-term care. She has served as Director of Operations, Director of Human Resources, and Assistant Director for memory care facilities in the state of Maryland. She is also an Assisted Living Manager. As a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer (CADDCT®), she is certified to present the comprehensive Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care (ADDC) curriculum to professionals within the geriatric healthcare industry. This is the required training to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP). She received her BA in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park.
