Introduction: Traumatic brain injury, stroke, and developmental disabilities cause varying levels of decreased physical and intellectual functioning. For residents with traumatic brain injury and stroke, some of these changes may be temporary; others may be permanent. Residents with traumatic brain injury and stroke may be admitted to your facility following rehabilitation. You may also have residents with lifelong developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, autism, or Down Syndrome. It is important to understand the type and level of disability an individual is experiencing in order to care for them effectively. The purpose of this program is to help you understand the causes, symptoms, and care considerations related to traumatic brain injury, stroke, and developmental disabilities.
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define common terminology related to traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, and developmental disabilities (DD);
  • Describe the causes of TBI, stroke, and DD;
  • Describe the symptoms of TBI, stroke, and DD;
  • Describe the physical and mental effects of TBI, stroke, and DD;
  • Describe care considerations related to TBI, stroke, and DD.
