Introduction: Restorative care is a philosophy. People who support this philosophy believe that the residents should be encouraged and helped to engage in functional and physical activities that match their capabilities during all activities of daily living. The focus of care is not just on providing adequate nutrition, but on having the residents enjoy meals and feed themselves as independently as their abilities allow.

The purpose of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to promote independent dining at your facility.
Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define restorative care as it relates to dining;
  • Identify the benefits of independent dining for residents;
  • Understand the resident’s physical, sensory, and cognitive skills as related to maintaining independent dining;
  • Acquire skills and information related to evaluating the resident’s physical, sensory, and cognitive functional levels;
  • Learn ways to promote independent dining;
  • Identify appropriate adaptive equipment that can increase the resident’s ability to eat independently and enjoy mealtime to a greater extent;
  • Understand the importance of exercise and the characteristics of an appropriate exercise program; and
  • Implement motivational techniques related to promoting independent dining.

Course Authors: This course was written by Dr. Bonnie L. Walker and Claire S. Cole, RN, C. The curriculum was reviewed by an interdisciplinary team of experts including: Barbara Resnick, PhD and Ellen Wruble, PhD. The program was developed by Harrington Software Associates, Inc, funded by a grant from NIA R44AG028194, Restorative Care Training for Staff in Long-Term Care Facilities.

NAB Approval Information: This educational offering has been reviewed by the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS) of the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) and approved for 1 clock hour.
