Introduction: Restorative care is a philosophy. People who support this philosophy believe that the residents should be encouraged and helped to engage in functional and physical activities that match their capabilities during all activities of daily living. The focus of care is not just on having the residents transfer safely and move independently from place to place, but on having the residents be as mobile as their abilities allow.

The purpose of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools you need to improve mobility and safe transfers for the residents at your facility.

Objectives: At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define restorative care as it applies to mobility and transfers;
  • Identify benefits of increased mobility for residents;
  • Understand the residents' physical, sensory, and cognitive skills as related to mobility and transfers;
  • Acquire skills and information related to evaluating the residents' physical, sensory, and cognitive functional levels;
  • Learn ways to improve mobility among the residents;
  • Identify appropriate adaptive equipment that can increase mobility;
  • Understand the importance of exercise and the characteristics of an appropriate exercise program; and
  • Implement motivational techniques to encourage and improve mobility among residents.
